The track was inspired by a fella I met back in Grimsby called Andy Clephane. He drives a beige Mercedes Benz and carries a walky talky. He’s a dedicated mall Santa at Tesco and spends half the year growing his beard for the role. He lives at home with his wife and his ghost. His eldest son moved out because he and the ghost didn’t see eye to eye. He’s only been abroad once and that was to Colorado, apparently. He hated it. I can’t remember for the life of me why I wrote a song about him but it was inevitable that I did. I wrote and demo’d the song in Camden in The Buggles’ old flat (Video Killed The Radio Star). I was living there at the time. The drums for the track were recorded in a shed up north by my mate who empties skips for a living. I finished the rest of it in an afternoon at The Bridge Studios in South London with Sam Harper.
